Plus they’re all pretty young. On the other hand, I’ve already come to a large degree of body acceptance and I don’t really need CrossFit so much for that.
Could I really get into lifting heavy weights? I wonder. I have no idea. It’d take a long while to build up the technique.
At least there wouldn’t be any reason to quit my job and forgo health insurance in pursuit of this.
••••••••
Here’s me on the beach in Goa last winter. I wasn’t practicing that hard either, because of all the mind fuckery going on with Rolf & Marci, God bless those crazy fuckers.
So… with diet changes and some weights what might happen?

Dear lord. Did I ever tell you that I found out what cross fit was because I saw two women puking outside of what I thought was a garage? Loved watching this, they are amazing ( I kept rubbing my lower back as a was watching though).
No! But thanks for that story. That’d be enough to deter me, I think. When my former boss (the lady who originally hired me at present company, back in 2004) made me run and outdoor race in Central Park the following spring, I almost barfed on my sneakers once over the finish line.
I’d stopped all running about six months prior & was unused to the extra effort of running outside, not to mention the excitement of the crowd at the finish line and the after effects of an exhilarated sprint.
I’ll add to this post. I’ll find that picture of me on the beach in Goa last winter. Granted I’m not wearing a bikini every day now and am not quite that buff at the moment. Still… I wonder.
There’s nothing wrong with barfing after heavy weights. It’s just your nervous system being a little shocked. Really. It’s like muscle soreness: it goes away once your body adjusts.
Well I’m safe from THAT possibility for awhile, because I don’t have any technique & won’t be going super heavy for awhile, if ever.
I’m excited to book the first WOD classes. I have 18 days, however I can’t yet reserve any classes because day 6 of Elements isn’t complete.
I emailed them, because all the classes in any slot I might take Fri or Sat are already full, Sunday is all general level and I need to start with beginner. I don’t mind starting Monday, but I want my 18 days to begin from there.
We’ll see!
I have no idea how long I’ll be in beginner classes. Is it weeks? Would it be months? No clue! The idea of a long road of learning (again) is super refreshing.
“Teach me! Teach me! Teach me!!!!” Lol

if all the beginner classes are full, ask one of the coaches of the regular classes if you could come to one of their classes and do a scaled WOD. if they’ve seen you and know you’re capable, they probably will, unless the gym is one of those mindless rules based places. they’re looking to include normally, not exclude.
Well the thing is, you can’t register for the class online unless you’re able to log in. I checked last night and my 18 days still aren’t activated. I’ll check again today! I hope it’s not a “screwy with the billing” place.
Sore today!

Also, I might add, I’d sort of rather start in a beginner class if I can. Especially the first few classes…

Wow! That’s amazing!
You know, in the Ashtanga, not only was I not learning anything the last couple years, but I wasn’t getting stronger. No one was challenging me with new poses or techniques AND the constant repetition was producing injuries that were making me weaker. Life was looking like a gradual, joyless decline.
I’m much happier now. And I can use the yoga too. I have to try to make a point to work in flexibility more, but I was happy last night that my introduction to handstand push-ups last night involved zero fear on the entry.
I need help to get down and up but you can bet I’m interested in the project! I went first because after the demo, when last night’s coach asked for takers, no one was enthusiastic besides me!
I felt bad for the people who were terrified of the kicking up part.
So I called to activate my 18 days. I think I’ll start Sat afternoon. I’m gonna try to go 3x a week.
Now that I’m free Friday I might stay in and practice some yoga.

I sense a new obsession….
I think this one fits more in the context of normal adult life. I guess I should say “might fit” right? Time will tell! I’ve already got my first 3 classes booked. I’d have continued reserving but they wisely put a cap on you at 3.
I’m naturally attracted to all the obsessive / compulsive types of activities.
Pretty sure I’m good to go for a month after my 18 days. We’ll see. If I start to feel like I’m getting stronger and looking stronger, the hook will be in. Fish on the line.
I like exercise to leave me with more energy for other stuff, not leave me with less time for other stuff. Ashtanga can be a job in and of itself.
Totally true. I’m already getting thicker though, which I don’t like.
I can’t believe how outrageously expensive ashtanga is for what you get & how I paid without thinking about it for so long.
If you factor in hours of availability it’s probably at LEAST ten times the price of any other organized exercise on NYC, unless you’re doing private sessions with done celebrity trainer.

i don’t think there’s any way you can do crossfit without getting stronger and also without looking stronger. sometimes you can look at a woman who does yoga and say, “look at her triceps, i bet she’s an ashtangi.” but regular crossfitters are even easier to pick out, male or female. just look at those women in the videos. they’re probably on the buffer end of the spectrum but the trainers i’ve seen around here look pretty much like them
People used to sometimes ask me if I’d been a gymnast, but I was definitely one of the buffer looking breed of Ashtangis. It’s amazing but some people with speactular practices – if you didn’t know them and saw them on the street you wouldn’t even immediately think they work out regularly.
I really think I might have to give up the idea of size 24 jeans though. I know I’m harping on that but my hamstrings… they tend to respond a little too well to direct stimulation.
